SHIFT a hair salon.
After 12 remarkable years in the hair and beauty industry, Teresa Alfieri ventures out and opens her own salon in Trolley Square, SHIFT – Suite 6B on the 2nd floor just above Walgreens. “I was doing hair before I went to hair school” Teresa shared. Unbeknownst to me, I would be her very last client of hundreds at the renowned Michael Christopher Salon & Spa in Wilmington where Teresa spent 11+ years perfecting her skills. Under the guidance and expertise of Michael himself, who was recently recognized by Delaware Today Magazine as one of The 50 Most Influential Delawareans of the Past 50 Years, Teresa has consistently evolved her skills traveling from California to Paris collecting inspiration and training for unisex cutting, coloring and styling. As for leaving Michael Christopher’s, Teresa has said that was equally as hard as it was easy. She was ready and as Delaware Today said “a creative stylist’s departure is a tribute to the Man and salon that started it all”. That Thursday night in early December 2011, will go down as a vivid memory for us both – just days before the Grand Opening of SHIFT and unbeknownst to Teresa, just days before our launch of NorthDelaWHEREHappening.com! Drinks on ME! Cheers, Wow & Congrats!

Why Trolley Square? Teresa and her husband, Michael, chose Trolley Square because “it just felt right” and for their love of the City. They virtually built out the space from the 2nd floor up – renovating the entire suite themselves with a little blood, sweat and tears (happy) support from their families. The space is warm & comfortable yet invigorating & sassy.  There’s a hip styling boutique where blow dryers hang from the ceiling and mirrors connect you from every angle, a cozy and quaint waiting room, a stylish coloring area which leads to the spacious outdoor balcony where you can grab a breath of fresh air and an incredible view of trolley square all while never leaving the salon technically (yes so no one will see you while you’re a hot mess in progress) AND the shampoo bowls are to “dye” for – no neck pain! Where’d you get those bowls? You actually CAN relax and enjoy a good shampoo here.  Amazing!

The Experience…I was a shampoo girl in high school and through college and as such have ample appreciation for the dedication and fortitude of a hair stylist – it’s high energy and you are on your feet all day – clients can be finicky and deservedly so!  Teresa makes you feel like you are #1 with every visit – no joke…it’s red carpet style starting with greeting you at the door and taking your coat. She says “I love that my day can consist of a beautiful bride, a new mom looking for a fresh look, or man/women asking for a classic style – every person has a different look, unique life style and individual needs. So our job is to give our guests what looks amazing and looks best.  With Michael and I opening our new salon – Shift, our job is to make our guests look and feel amazing while they enjoy the experience and relax. It’s not just a career, it’s my passion.” And it shows.

Loyalty evolves…I had the pleasure of meeting Teresa via our mutual friend and her client, Melanie, in 2008. Our team “Dash for the Cure” walked in the 3 Day Walk for Breast Cancer in Philadelphia. Teresa offered to assist us with a Hair fundraising event to support our cause. Her efforts, along with many amazing stylists at MC, helped our team raise more than $2200 in the fight against Breast Cancer. She is truly one of a kind and whats even more, she is passionate about paying it forward. In 2009, I found myself suddenly in search of a  new stylist as mine had moved on to another industry and who was my first pick?  – Teresa. I did good.

The Recommendation – Are you in search of a new stylist or colorist or more, I, Tracy Burton Zigman, highly recommend Teresa. She’s top notch! And has equally become a great friend and confidant – Teresa is top 10 in my speed dial and text list for sure! I’ll be a loyal client and friend for as long as she’ll have me. Consider this my word-of-mouth recommendation. For those of you that remember the original Electric Company show on PBS and the sound-it-out skits — do it with me “Shhhh” –“IFT” – SHIFT!   You heard it here!

Teresa’s Got Tips – 5:

1.  For fine lifeless hair – apply volumizing product & flip your head upside down to dry

2.  For curly hair – when you are towel drying, don’t rough up your hair – blot dry, it keeps the frizz away!

3.  Don’t put ponytails in too tight, it could cause your hair to break.

4.  For the ladies that love lots of hairspray, use a clarifying shampoo every other week.

5.  If you use hot tools, a conditioning treatment is a must!
